English as a New Language (ENL)

English as a New Language (ENL), formerly English as a Second Language (ESL)

We welcome English Language Learner students (ELL) in kindergarten through fifth grade at all levels of English language proficiency: Entering (beginner), Emerging (low intermediate), Transitioning (high intermediate), Expanding (advanced), and Commanding (proficient; former ELL).

Our ELL students have a wide range of home languages, including Spanish, Arabic, Haitian Creole, Mandarin, Bengali, Fulani, and more. We encourage our ENL students to continue to develop their first language while gaining proficiency in the English language. In addition to gaining metalinguistic awareness, research has shown that that the bilingual or multilingual brain can have better attention and task-switching capacities thanks to its developed ability to inhibit one language while using another.
